Opening your pool in the spring is a task that can be handled by the home owner quite easily.  If the pool was closed and covered during the winter, the water should be clear and clean beneath the cover.  Just fill the pool with water and take a sample to your pool retailer for analysis.  Once the chemicals are identified for balancing the water introduce them according to the instructions.  Have the water circulate until the chemicals have been disolved into the water.  Most pools are designed with a 12 hour turnover, so run the pool so that at least one turnover has been accomplished, then get another water sample in for analysis.  Once the water is warm enough, go swimming.
